Cucho
TXT: Yoss illustration: Luis Lorenzo
In 1979, artist Virgilio Martínez Gainza gave Cuban children a new and passionate science fiction comic strip in the weekly Pionero: Doctor Takion. Along with the eccentric discoverer of a particle faster than light, this clever caricaturist ‘recycled’ several of his previous characters, like the mad scientist Botark, and the parodical Supertiñosa, transformed here in the positive but dull Tiño.
But it was the serious and reflective dog Cucho, the cosmic, a more intelligent version of Pucho, the irreverent stray dog who years before in Mella, the weekly magazine of the Cuban communist youth, condemned the actions of imperialism and its lackeys with his implacable urine and stole the hearts of his little readers.
