I started at Radio Progreso when it was on the corner of Reina and Lealtad, in the old Mil Diez studios. Radio Progreso broadcast from somewhere else but that studio was where we recorded. Later on, they opened Radio Progreso’s new studios on Infanta and 25. There was also the café run by María La Grande or la Granda on the same corner, a real countrywoman, and I can still remember the conversation of Elvira Cervera, an excellent actress and a very good friend of mine and of Miguel Navarro, Radio Progreso’s young blood, telling us that our interests most surely went beyond the radio and that’s how the National Dramatic Group took shape. Other members were Carlos Ruiz de la Tejera, Alejandro Lugo and Violeta Casal, and it represented an important phase in the history of acting in Cuba.
